About: Cryptolepis is a climbing shrub with dancing star-like yellow blossoms that grows in savannah forests in parts of Africa, Asia and Indonesia. Our source is presently from two African countries. The bright, golden roots are collected from the wild in Ghana for use as a beautiful dye source, as well as supportive root tonic for humans. Cryptolepis root contains Neocryptolepine as the main bioactive compound along with Biscryptolepine, a secondary component.
In traditional African ways, the alkaloid rich roots have been used for generations both internally and topically. Presently, Cryptolepis has made its way to North America where its popularity is well warranted. We are currently working with a team in Ghana who are beginning to farm this important herb, so that it will be available for generations to come!
The golden Cryptolepis sanguinolenta we receive from Cameroon is the same species as that from Ghana but the roots are rouge tinted. Depending on which roots are used to prepare our extract or glycerite, you will notice either a bright yellow-gold or rouge- gold color. Sometimes a the roots of a plant growing in a different environment and soil type, may have a slight difference in color. But you will surely recognize the unique taste of this remarkable root!
