Superfoods have been a hot topic of conversation and debate over the last few years. Many scientists dispute the use of the term “superfood,” and instead use different terminology. Unlike natural herbal supplements that are used on a daily basis to supplement nutrients that we do not get within our diets, superfoods are solid foods. Superfoods are nutrient dense and great for overall health. Many superfoods are plant-based but others are dairy and fish based.

When an individual does not eat the proper proportions of nutrient dense foods such as superfoods, natural herbal supplements can be used to replace missing vitamins and minerals. Natural superfoods should always be eaten without additives; sugar, salts, etc. As with everything in life, moderation is key. Excess amounts of any food can be unhealthy and counterproductive.

When you are searching for healthy, nutrient dense foods, head to natural food stores or to Clinical Nutrition Centers. Some of the most portable superfoods are nuts and seeds. Nuts and seeds carry high levels of necessary minerals that your body needs to function. They are also high in healthy fats (monounsaturated fat, polyunsaturated fat, Omega-3 fatty acids.) Be aware that salted, cooked, or sugar covered nuts are not as healthy as raw nuts and seeds.

Another superfood that should be found in every home in America is leafy green vegetables. Kale, spinach, chard, collards, cabbages, and broccoli are all packed with tons of different vitamins and minerals. Unless there is an underlying condition that prohibits you from eating vegetables, load up on these! Many companies have also released versions of natural herbal supplements that were developed from these leafy greens for those who dislike vegetables.
