Holistic Treatments for Beginners: Part Three

Holistic medicine is the practice of finding natural ways to cure ailments using plants and herbs that are found in nature. There are many different ways to practice holistic medicine, and you can even combine the use of herbs and natural treatments with traditional Western medicine. That being said, there are many people who don’t know all of the wonderful benefits you can experience from a single plant, or multiple herbs when you mix them together. In this series, we’ve discussed a few different herbs and how they can help different ailments. As we continue with part three of this series, we will discuss even more tips and treatment methods that you can try on your own.

At Clinical Nutrition Centers in Pittsburgh, we believe in healing the body as a whole instead of prescribing medications that will simply cover up the symptoms. We will work with you to discover the root cause of your illness, and our doctor will recommend the necessary natural vitamin supplements you need, in the correct dosage, to heal your body from within. We also carry numerous homeopathic treatments that are designed to improve your health and wellness management on a daily basis. Essential Oils

Essential oils have become extremely popular recently, although, most people do not use them for their homeopathic benefits. Instead, most people will place their favorite oils into a diffuser as a way to make their homes or office spaces smell better. That being said, essential oils can be used in a number of different ways, and each oil will have different properties that you can enjoy. The best thing about essential oils is that you don’t need very many, especially if you are just starting out. You only need a few basic oils, and most of them are extremely cost-efficient and will last you many years, depending on how often you use them. Some of the most basic essential oils you should have in your collection include:

Eucalyptus

If you’re suffering from a cold or chest congestion, then eucalyptus oil is the perfect thing to have on hand! You can easily turn this essential oil into your own vapor rub simply by mixing it with a little olive oil or coconut oil and rubbing it on your chest, back, or even on the bottoms of your feet before you go to bed. Not only will this oil smell better than store-bought vapor rubs, but you will also have the added benefit of knowing exactly what goes into your new vapor rub.

Peppermint

Most people associate peppermint with gum, candy, or other items that are used to make your breath smell fresh and clean. However, peppermint is also extremely beneficial as an essential oil. In part two of this series, we discussed some of the added benefits of peppermint, and how you can find it in the form of a tea or in the form of an oil. Peppermint essential oil is great to have on hand for a regular, everyday treatment. Use it as a topical treatment if you have sore muscles or headaches. However, peppermint oil is extremely potent, so you may want to mix it with olive oil or coconut oil to dilute it when applying it to the skin. If you are feeling nauseous, then smelling peppermint oil is a great way to calm your stomach.

Lavender

Lavender is another essential oil that is good to have on hand as an everyday remedy. Unlike peppermint and eucalyptus, lavender is not necessarily used to treat physical ailments. Instead, you can use lavender when you’re feeling irritated or stressed. You can use it topically and apply it to areas of your skin using a carrier oil (olive oil or coconut oil), or you can add drops to a diffuser. Many people don’t know that lavender is also a great remedy for common kitchen burns. If you burn yourself on a hot pan or on the oven, you can apply some lavender oil and it will help ease the pain.
